Tables and chairs in American classrooms are arranged like this

2024-09-14

The placement of desks and chairs in the classroom is also a part of classroom management, and different placement methods have different reasons, not just to look good.      What does the university ask about the placement of classroom tables and chairs?      The main reason why the problem of classroom management is difficult is that it is a systemic problem and there is a process.      Unlike classroom layout, having an idea and doing something well, it can be used for a year if it is arranged once before school starts, and at most it can be replaced once or twice in the middle.      Classroom management is different.      After the students enter the classroom, Bell Work makes them enter the learning state, and then the teacher starts teaching, everything goes smoothly.

Please look at the picture below.      If the teacher is standing in the "X" position, which position of the students are most likely to start small gestures or small talk?      Yes, as you can guess, the students who were farthest from where the teacher was standing were the most distracted.      In such a classroom, the teacher has to walk through the whole classroom to get to the students, which is a waste of time.

Therefore, American primary and secondary school classes emphasize that teachers should avoid standing in one place, but should constantly walk around.      When designing the placement of desks and chairs, the first thing to consider is the "moving path" of the teacher in the classroom.

When I first arrived in the United States, I noticed that both my Spanish and French teachers had U-shaped classrooms.      The teacher stands in the middle, the student's desk is right around the teacher to form a "U", and the teacher mainly walks on the inside.      I thought: Why is the table set like this?      What is the biggest difference between this and our traditional Chinese classroom?      Later, after reading the relevant books, I learned that there is a principle for the placement of desks and chairs in the classroom: let the teacher go to the seat of each student in the shortest time.      In the U-shaped classroom, the teacher stands in the middle, and the position of each student is very close, almost all students are under the teacher's "eyes", so that there is no "dead corner" in the classroom.      As long as a student starts to stray, the teacher can go to his side in the shortest time.

However, this way of placement is mainly suitable for classes with fewer students, half arc, U shape can be.      If there are a large number of students, say more than 20, the U-shaped arrangement of tables and chairs will not work as well.      Still around the above principles, you can take a look at the following pictures, the blue part represents the scope of activity of the teacher, the red part represents the main "moving path" of the teacher:

The table and chair placement in Figure 1 is relatively simple, and most teachers' current classrooms can be integrated into the above form.      When the teacher walks between two horizontal lines, he can take care of the students in two rows at a time.      The most important thing is to ensure that there is enough space for teachers to move between the first and third rows.

Figure 6 is most suitable for the computer room, of course, if the outside circle of students and the computer exchange position, it is also a good choice, the teacher walks in the middle, you can take care of the two circles of students at the same time.

There are three points to summarize:
1.      During class, the teacher moves around as much as possible.
2.      Design the "moving path" of teachers, so that teachers can walk to each student's seat in the shortest time no matter where they are.
3.      The placement of the table should leave enough space for the teacher's "moving path".
